Trialling an improved Elizabeth Street
The City of Melbourne will close Elizabeth Street to southbound traffic at Flinders Lane in early-2019, converting the strip of road into a partial pedestrian mall with greenery and permanent outdoor furniture.
The Space Agency was engaged to design a high-impact Minimum Viable Place that reflected and tested the feasibility of the City of Melbourne's vision for the redevelopment of southern Elizabeth Street.
The Elizabeth Street Pop-Up Park functioned as a green space for residents, workers and visitors to enjoy, while also giving Melbournians insight into the potential redevelopment of Elizabeth Street and allowing them to be directly involved in refining the vision.
In place for three months, the space attracted upwards of 200,000 visitors. Using beacon technology and observational studies The Space Agency was able to create a detailed report on the trial that is being used to inform how similar interventions might be actioned around Melbourne.
