Southbank Boulevard Community Engagement

Transforming Southbank Boulevard into a linear park

Southbank is Melbourne’s most densely populated suburb with a population of 20,000 residents and 45,000 workers. The current residential population is forecast to rise by 175 per cent in the next 15 years. With over 96 per cent of Southbank’s population living in apartments with little access to outdoor space, creating new and accessible public open space is crucial.


The Space Agency was engaged by the City of Melbourne to plan for the future of Southbank and create a new urban green-space through the centre of Melbourne's iconic arts precinct.

The Space Agency designed and implemented an experiential community engagement program in late-2015 to support Council with stage one consultation. The engagement included activations in the lobbies of the area's cultural institutions, pop-up consultations across Southbank, and a one-day street party that took over Southbank Boulevard to replicate what the new green space might look like.
